Fair Winds, Antonio Mussari

We learned with deep sadness of the passing of Antonio Mussari, founder and long-time Director of the Museum of the Sea of Naples.

We remember him through the words of Elvira Mata, former President of AMMM:

“I remember Antonio’s early years in AMMM very clearly. Much of what was created, developed and firmly established around maritime culture in Naples, not only the Museum of the Sea but also the tireless commitment to preserving historic shipyards, was made possible thanks to his determination, his perseverance and his ability to face and overcome complex challenges, both professionally and personally.

Antonio also played an active role in the network of the Historic Docks of the Mediterranean, which sadly is no longer active today. Thanks to that project, many of us had the opportunity to meet him on several occasions in Naples and to share with him not only professional experiences, but also genuine bonds of friendship.

But Antonio was also a skilled and passionate professional. He was an honest and generous person, a truly good man in the deepest and most authentic sense of the term.

Together with Maria Paola Profumo, also a former President of AMMM, I had the privilege of spending several days with Antonio and his partner Paola in their home in Naples, a memory I still cherish with great affection. From that house, the sea and Mount Vesuvius seemed to stretch out before him, creating a view that I still associate with his memory today.

Fair winds, my friend. We will be forever grateful for everything you have left us and for the example you gave to all of us.”

On behalf of the entire Association of Mediterranean Maritime Museums (AMMM), we extend our heartfelt condolences to Paola, as well as to Antonio’s family and friends during this time of sorrow.

His memory will continue to sail with us through the institutions, projects and friendships that he helped to build.
