Group description
This group is made up of museums that have salt pans or any kind of heritage linked to salt such as the fish salting industry and natural cultural landscapes, which are a reference in the Mediterranean. Since ancient times, salt has had great importance in the evolution of human history, both biologically and ritually due to the symbolism of preserving evil, as well as in food preservation. Today, the range of possibilities for the uses of salt is enormous. It is a heritage that we cannot lose and museums have the duty to value it.
Objectives of the group
- Conservation of this cultural and natural heritage
- Digitization of elements
- Dissemination (web, publications, guided tours, congresses…)
- Networking
- Heritage declaration for conservation
- Sustainability (SDG objectives)

Activities carried out / main outcomes

The first week of June 2026 is planned to attend the International Congress on Salt to be held in Cardona (Catalonia)

New members are welcome, by invitation

Profile of participants sought
All types of museums but preferably those that preserve salt heritage and have carried out informative activities on new uses of salt and preservation of spaces.
Additional notes
The salt landscape is a heritage that must be claimed, since it is as old as humanity and especially throughout the Mediterranean it had great importance and connected different peoples and cultures through the Salt Routes. The museums of the AMMM must open themselves to the experiences of other museums linked to this topic to work together and achieve the set objectives.
